Created in 2001 on the occasion of the Celebrations for the Verdi Centenary, the internet event called VapensieroDay represented one of the most significant experiences in the use of the computer net:  24 hours of the internet direct from Busseto and the five continents was, both from a cultural and a technological point of view, the maddest adventure that could be imagined at the time, capable of uniting tradition and modernity.
It was as close as could be to what the Internet has become in the course of the decade:  a planetary channel in which use and production are totally decentralized, thanks to the work of the organisms that created it and support it:  the Regione Emilia-Romagna and the Provincia di Parma, the Comuni of Busseto and Parma, the Ministero degli Affari Esteri and that of Beni e Attività Culturali, the Comitato Nazionale per le Celebrazioni Verdiane, the Consulta del Emigrazione of the Region, Ltt and Telecom.
March 9th, a date significant in Verdi's life and for those who recognize in Giuseppe Verdi a central figure in cultural history, has been chosen in commemoration of the first performance of the chorus "Va pensiero".
It was, in fact, on March 9th, 1842 when Nabucodonosor was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala.  The opera was Verdi's first big success, making him known as a great artist to the national and international public.  The VapensieroDay has ideally reproposed one of Verdi's best known pieces of music, one that, taken from the Book of Psalms, echoes the theme of the exiles, of all those forced to migrate far from their own lands.  This is a theme that 160 years from that occasion in 1842 continues to demonstrate its profound actuality.
The basic idea was undoubtedly innovative:  thinking of the Internet as an enormous”virtual square” where people of every nation could meet to remember and celebrate Giuseppe Verdi, enjoying live exhibitions of music, readings, critical comments, moments of theater coming from many different parts of the world:  Busseto, but also London, Buenos Aires, Melbourne, New York, Santiago de Cuba.
The editions
In its three editions 20012002 and 2004 ValpensieroDay made this possible in the name of the Maestro of Busseto, building a bridge between the century of Melodrama and the third millenium; it realized the “Italian dream” of so many of our fellow countrymen living around the world, it represented an interesting “arts laboratory” and at the same time it constituted an extraordinary “promotional” vehicle for our region.
Its enormous success, far outpacing the available technology, was the most welcome prize for all, especially for the many people who put in so much effort to make it possible.
For the Bicentennial of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi the appointment with VapensieroDay is returning on March 9th, 2013.
This edition entitled Emilia-Romagna Va' Pensiero: all'opera per il terremoto will be dedicated to the collection of funds for the historical theaters damaged in the earthquakes of May 20th and 29th.
In particular we may remember the theaters of:  Crevalcore, Pieve di Cento, Cento, Carpi, Concordia dulla Secchia, Finale Emilia, Medolla, Mirandola, San Felice sul Panaro, Castello d'Argile, Rio Saliceto, Grastalla, Ferrara.
